The Position of Satellites In Latin Word Order
In the Functional Grammar (FG) paradigm satellites are hierarchically ordered into different categories, viz. predicate, predication, proposition and illocutionary satellites. This classification is primarily motivated semantically and the criteria for distinguishing the categories are not always clear, although there is some intuitive agreement on the matter. Neither is it clear how the criteria should be adopted to the level of subordinate clauses (cf. Ros (in preparation)).
Word order is probably the most promising criterion. Therefore, a corpus consisting of letters from Cicero will be investigated. I will try to find out which position each satellite category normally takes in the Latin clause. Special attention will be paid to the use of subordinate clauses.
The paper will thus address two aims. First, it will contribute to the understanding of Latin word order, taking into account the position of satellites, while hitherto the main focus has been on arguments, i.e. SVO/SOV classification. Second, it will challenge the FG theory on the hierarchical structure of the clause, trying to offer evidence for the proposed classification of satellites and, where necessary, suggesting adjustments.
