Cicero and the Art of Translation
The purpose of my paper is to make a comparison between the way followed by Cicero in translating Homer, on the one hand, and his own methodical concepts of translation, on the other hand. I am going to investigate in what way a poetical translation made by Cicero differs from his translation of e. g. a Greek philosophical text, and how this relates to the traditions of poetical translation in ancient Rome (from Livius Andronicus onwards). I would also like to add another point of view, namely, that of the different functions of the two types of translation as to the author himself and his readers as well.
